The Not Obvious Fantasy Picks of the Year.

August 26, 2009

Alright so I gave who I love and who I hate in my last post. This is a little game that I invented. It’s called Not The Obvious and it goes like this. I broke down every team in the NFL and gave the best Fantasy Football value of a player that you won’t want to draft in the first few rounds. Some are more obvious than others and that is either simply because the team is on pace to be a grease fire or they have so many players that would go early.

For example, Kevin Smith is going to go quick because he is a RB. But he is still one of the lower half of RBs that I personally would take in the draft. So he might be high on your board, but he’s not on mine. Others like Donnie Avery might go quick as well because he is a #1 WR but I still think you can grab a guy like that in the 10th round. So here it goes.

NFC North:

Green Bay Packers: Mason Crosby- K- I get Jennings. I really do. I’m not going with him. Since Jennings explosion (onto your mom’s face) onto the fantasy scene 2 years ago it’s almost been surreal. If he keeps up that 21 TDs in 2 years pace, I’ll eat my hat

Minnesota Vikings: Bernard Berrian- WR- I guess this is the 2nd obvious pick but you can definitely grab Berrian really low in your draft as people are not confident in his abilities, plus Childress is a high school coach and Favre’s arm is questionable at best. The passing game has went up leaps and bounds in everyone’s book but Berrian made a name off the deep ball with Grossman and Favre is a “gunslinger”

Detroit Lions: Kevin Smith- RB- The Lions are abysmal. Even after their 0-16 season. I don’t think they’ll go 0-16 and this generic named rusher will be more than a generic back given a decent offensive line.

Chicago Bears: Earl Bennett- WR- I like Cutler’s arm and even though he [Cutler] was gross in his first preseason game I expect him to come around eventually once he stops being an emo looking douche.

NFC South:

New Orleans Saints: Jeremy Shockey- TE- The 2nd Year in this offense should benefit him. They are also a pass happy team and I just so happen to HATE Pierre Thomas.

Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan- QB- In what has become a pretty prolific offense in a short time Matt Ryan might be the 8th or 9th rated QB on board and you can grab him in the later rounds while grabbing some top talent in the first few rounds.

Carolina Panthers- Defense- I really like the Panthers defense. They kept Peppers with that tricky franchise tag. He is the backbone of that defense and last year actually won a few games for me!

Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Kellen Winslow JR- TE- With a crowded backfield and a shaky QB situation Winslow seems to be the only definite. Well that and Gruden being biased when the Bucs play and he’s commenting.

NFC West:

St Louis Rams: Donnie Avery- WR- This guy will actually be on my HATE list because he sucks. He’s just the #1 and by default will get decent stats. I just didn’t want to pick the only player I LOVE there which is Stephen Jackson. I think Ronald Curry will get more time than indicated on their depth chart but who knows.

San Francisco 49ers- Vernon Davis- TE- Ok, now hear me out before you scream “BUST!” at me like people scream at your sister constantly. I think if he stops being such an overly jacked whiner, he will thrive in this offense. I always think TEs will be better with inexperienced QBs and Shaun Hill was top 4 in passing yards and TDs after he got the nod. So go screw. Many would say Josh Morgan. I don’t like him and Vernon Davis is a big, big man.

Seattle Seahawks- Edgerrin James- RB- He can easily steal this position from Julius Jones. He can also easily get in a car wreck and perish. Whatever man, it’s your draft.

Arizona Cardinals- Anquan Boldin- WR- This seems like an obvious choice but in my draft he didn’t leave until the 6th round. I think that is a steal for THE BEST #2 WR in the league in a pass happy offense. With Beanie Wells hurt and Hightower being terrible he should get a lot of balls. Ok, just like your mom. God, I am on fire tonight.
NFC East:

Philadelphia Eagles: Jeremy Maclin- WR- He is by far my best rookie WR on board. Even though he had a bit of the jitters, I think he is going to steal balls from DeSean Jackson whom was a rookie stand out but now will garnish a lot more attention. Or, if they go Wildcat, Maclin will be terrible and Westbrook and Vick will only be good. I’m just a blogger, not a warlock.

Washington Redskins- Chris Cooley- TE- By far the coolest guy in the draft. Not just because of his name has the first four letter but because he shows his man parts while reading playbooks and fantasy drafts. Not to mention interviews Colt Brennan and Chase Daniels during their 3rd String QB race. He might be the 7th or 8th best TE available but will but up relatively close numbers to #3.

Dallas Cowboys- Felix Jones- RB- This guy is just going to get more and more carries as he matures into the league’s upper echelon of RBs. I hate saying it. I also think Marion Barber is really good. But Jerry Jones got him because he is an alumni of his college for a reason

New York Giants- Mario Manningham- WR- This is a bold prediction but I think he is going to be the #1 WR by the end of the season. If you don’t like it, take Ahmad Bradshaw and cram his 1,200 yards down your cram-hole. Yeah, I said 1,200 yards. He’s better than DeAngelo Williams.

AFC North:

Baltimore Ravens: Ray Rice- RB- I’m eating my words with saying Willis McGahee will start by Week 1 already. Ray Rice who is almost like a hometown hero to me is going to beat him out and get +10 in the TD category than he did from last year. What’d he get, 0?

Cleveland Browns- Brady Quinn- QB- It’s his team. It’s his time. He’s got the arm. Only if Braylon Edwards turns into that freakish WR that he was two years ago than Brady will be a top QB talent in this league by the end of the year. Edwards is the X-Factor though.

Cincinnati Bengals- Cedric Benson- RB- I love the value you can get for Carson Palmer as a 10th-11th rated QB but Benson is one of those rare backs who doesn’t share a backfield nearly as much as other candidates. Even as much as Peterson and DeAngelo Williams do.

Pittsburgh Steelers- Rashard Mendenhall- RB- A guy who was largely forgotten by the fantasy world because he lowered his shoulder to Ray Lewis last year. Although not smart, he is an ex-#1 pick for the Steelers who run the effing ess out of the ball. They are obviously not committed to “Fast” Willie Parker and this kid could be the next big thing since the Terrible Towel.

AFC South:

Tennessee Titans: Jared Cook- TE- I thought this was the steal of the draft when I saw Tennessee take him. I think he’ll be a big time contributor to a shaky passing program. Algae Crumpler was just a product of a system. The end.

Houston Texans- Matt Schaub- QB- I was actually convinced this by my buddy Mike the other day. I totally regret writing this post because it’s so long and I couldn’t put Slaton or Johnson here with my stupid rules.

Indianapolis Colts- Alex Gonzalez- WR- Some are believing that he is the #1 over Reggie Wayne. I don’t, but if Peyton likes this kid enough he could catch for 2,000 yards. Fact.

Jacksonville Jaguars- Torry Holt- WR- Even though I hate Garrard and think he’s fat, Holt goes here because he wants to have a HUGE “fuck you” season to the St. Louis Rams who dropped him for Donnie Avery. He has consistently been one of the best WRs in the league and it’s not his fault the Rams were so bad last year. Blame Bulger and Jackson’s tampon problems.

AFC WEST:

Oakland Raiders: Darrius Heyward-Bey- WR- This isn’t my pick. Al Davis mailed it in. He said this kid is good and that’s the reason they took him over Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin when Hugh never even heard of him or his stupid 40 yard dash time.

San Diego Chargers: Defense- I really like the Chargers. I feel they have an underrated defense who forces turnovers with great cornerbacks and a phenomenal pass rush. Remember, Merriman is back and has crazy blue hair (photo not included)

Denver Broncos: Correll Buckhalter- RB- If Moreno doesn’t play the preseason expect amazingly amazing value out of Buckhalter in his first 3 games until he crumbles like a Dodge Neon in a fender bender by some LB.

Kansas City Chiefs: Matt Cassel- QB- This guy was given 3 shiny new WRs plus Dwayne Bowe and Larry Johnson. He should excel. If he doesn’t well the guy’s last planned start was in high school. I actually started more games at my college sport than he did at USC. He’s on my level.

AFC East:

New York Jets: Dustin Keller- TE- My sleeper TE pick. He has great pass catching abilities. Not a great run blocker but you don’t score that in fantasy. Right?

New England Patriots- Fred Taylor- RB- I can’t believe he is falling so low in so many years after Laurence Maroney (who was once considered a top 5 pick) has been so bad for them. He was in Hawaii last year. I’d trust the savy veteran who has proven people wrong his whole career.

Miami Dolphins- Pat White- QB- If they run that silly Wildcat circus abortion offense he will be light years ahead of Chad Pennington in the depth chart.

Buffalo Bills- Trent Edwards- QB- Probably the best value for a QB that anyone has seen. He is throwing to TO for Christ’s sake. He is going to get like 4 bajillions yards with that guys YAC. I drafted him as my back up QB in the last 5 rounds of a 16 round draft.

————————————————————————————————————————————————-

So there you have it. Those are my low rated players that should be grabbed in later rounds solely because of their upside. They are all risks and many split time or don’t even have the starting position yet. It’s still preseason and these are predictions from a blogger. But then again, I can out pick Mel Kiper Jr. every year of the draft and he probably has a yacht the size of my high school. So before you yell at me for the rules of my game, please think it over and come up with a less known choice on that team that you would think has giant upside. I’m curious as to people that I forgot.

Come on. Saying that you started more games at your sport than Cassel did in college is kind of lame. For all you know I started a game on my college’s Curling team. That one game is more than Cassel started. He started 0 games for USC. Douche Lobster…..I kid, good article Logic, though you might have let your real name slip in the article.

Touche. But that was my point. I started 6 college lacrosse games in my career. He started 0 USC games. And I often slip when talking in the 3rd person. I forget which name I go by. Logic, Hugh, Daddy… It’s all in the name of science anyway.

is Donte Drink and Drive better?

              • August 27, 2009 5:19 pm

                How about “Donte’s Designated Driver?”
